Rescued Fox Has Become A Labrador’s Best Friend

Gemma Holdway, a 19-year-old student, lives on a farm with her family in Bath, Somerset, in southwest England. In March, the father of this young woman discovered a litter of five newborn animals in one of the barns, never realizing that they would forever change the direction of a tiny fox and her brothers’ lives.

The guy initially assumed it was kittens, but Gemma and her boyfriend Dan Pearse, who are students of science and animal management, were able to discern that it was a litter of foxes that were not next to their mother for unexplained reasons.

Gemma lives on a major road and believes the mother of the foxes was run over, because when checking the security camera system they never saw her return for the children.

The youngsters chose to keep them warm in a straw box and both felt an extraordinary connection with one of the newborns, who happened to be the smallest of the litter.

They were all concerned that the babies would perish owing to their mother’s absence, so they were transported to a veterinary facility to be inspected before being released back into their natural environment.

They discovered that the young fox was very ill and that her prospects of life were slim. The correct thing to do was to care for her until she recovered completely, and she was named Vixey.

Gemma and her partner were aware of all the care required to heal her, and Vixey has since lived peacefully with the family’s four puppies named Luna, Raisin, Nidge, and Polar Bear, being regarded as one of the herd.

Vixey opened her eyes after five days in her home, and being familiar with her surroundings presented a significant risk if she was returned to her environment since identification with people meant she might not have acquired crucial survival behaviors.

Gemma stated:

“Vixey’s heart is obviously that of a dog. I understand that she is still a wild animal by nature, but she grew up surrounded by domestic animals and humans who raised her as a pet. If we release it into its natural habitat, it may be wounded or killed; wild foxes may scent something strange in it and regard it as prey to hunt.”

Vixey gets along well with all of the dogs, but she has a special affinity with Luna from the start, and they are now great friends; they are frequently seen together.

The fox prefers wet dog food over meat, and when fed chicken or pig at Christmas, he typically refuses it. She is also taught to use the restroom outside.

Her life is quite nice and peaceful since she may run freely on several acres of grass. Gemma intends to take her on a walk with her dogs one day, but she hasn’t gotten used to walking on a leash, so she’s wearing a ferret harness.

The pair is conscious that it is still a wild animal and that if they do not take proper care of it, predators will discover it.

Although Gemma adores Vixey, she does not want others to be persuaded to adopt other foxes as pets; this young girl’s case was exceptional owing of the danger she was in.

The story of Vixey and Luna is quite similar to the 1981 Disney picture, The Fox and the Hound, in which an unusual relationship between a dog and a fox is depicted, and this is what has fascinated its viewers the most.
